The Last Night (E3 2017)

The best reveals at E3 are always the ones you don’t see coming. Sure, the trailer for the Xth installment of any popular franchise will be fun, but won’t be anything you haven’t seen before. And as much as I love seeing classic games like Shadow Of The Colossus get the remaster treatment, a 12-year-old game being redone is almost the definition of ‘nothing new’.

So the reveal trailer for The Last Night by indie outfit Odd Tales may be the coolest thing at E3 this year. It came out of nowhere, surprising everyone at the show. The pixel art combines with the parallaxed 3D effects and realistic lighting to create the smoothest retro-inspired game art we’ve seen in years. We really don’t know anything about the game itself yet, but the neon-drenched Blade-Runner-styled cyberpunk world the trailer paints looks amazing. The art is reminiscent of classic Lucasarts point-and-click adventures, and the studio quotes the classic Another World as a direct inspiration. We can’t wait to get our hands on this one!
